The Uintah Basin TAH (UB-TAH)
Project represents a collaborative effort among
Duchesne County School
District,
Uintah County School District,
Ute Tribe Education
Department/LEA (on the U&O Reservation),
Utah State
University-Uintah Basin, and other history and education
organizations. The three school districts serve 28 schools, 104
teachers, and 9,737 students; the majority (94%) of Ute students
attend county schools; the remaining 6% attend the Tribe’s
school. The Uintah Basin (UB) TAH Project will serve
Ute
and non-Ute teachers, students, and schools; however, while designing and implementing this project, it is
important to take into consideration this group of community
members.
The Uintah Basin TAH Project
will develop and implement professional development for
Uintah Basin’s school districts’ 104 4th, 5th,
7th, 8th, 11th,
and 12th grade
social studies teachers that strengthens teachers’ ability to
teach traditional American history as a separate
subject. Professional development will focus on four
historical themes and two ways of
knowing and thinking about
U.S. history. To make history come alive, a variety of
pedagogical methods
will be embedded (and related resources provided) into the
presentation of the American history content.
The UB-TAH Project will focus on four historical themes that are
intended to cover all major branches of U.S. historical
study and are in accord with the
NAEP U.S. History Framework
developed by the National Assessment Governing Board (NAGB).
Three
course formats (Summer Academy, school-year Workshops, and
school-year Fieldtrips) plus NCHE annual national conference
participation will be
provided each year. Participating teachers will also receive
mentoring support and access to valuable history education
resources.
Historical
Themes:
